10 Unwholesome Actions

10 Actions That Lead to Wholesome Results

First, cease to do evil. Ten unwholesome actions which should be avoided are as follows:

Learn to do good. Ten actions that lead to wholesome results are:

1.

Consciously refrain from taking the life of any being.

1.

Save and protect the lives of all beings.

2.

Refrain from taking what is not freely given.

2.

Practice generosity by giving as much as one is able.

3.

Refrain from inappropriate sexual conduct.

3.

Act as though the Buddha is beside one.

4.

Refrain from lying.

4.

Speak with honesty.

5.

Refrain from talk that promotes discord (slander).

5.

Bring reconciliation and peace where discord has been sown.

6.

Refrain from speaking in unkindly ways to others.

6.

Speak with kindness.

7.

Refrain from gossip and idle chatter.

7.

Use speech wisely.

8.

Refrain from coveting other's possessions and positions.

8.

Rejoice in the good fortune of others.

9.

Refrain from resenting the good fortune of others.

9.

Continuously think of how to help others find greater happiness and release from sorrow.

10.

Refrain from holding a closed mind about things one doesn't fully understand.

10.

Avoid reacting with distaste or aversion when others speak with false authority. Instead, practice awareness of cause and effect and take refuge in truth.
