Code of Conduct for Teachers

Although we have not experienced the following problems since our inception, we are aware that, at times, difficulties have arisen in the melding of Eastern traditions and teachings with Western attitudes and outlooks. Sometimes, the consequence has caused damage and distress to teachers and students.

We have chosen to address these matters with an additional "Code of Conduct for Teachers", so that those who come to teach among us will be clear about where we stand on these issues.

7.

I understand that I, as a teacher, must act responsibly with a clear and open mode of conduct, bearing in mind the responsibility I hold to the group as a whole. If I find myself facing an ambiguous situation, without clear moral guidelines, I will seek consultation with my peers or spiritual friends.

8.

I am aware of a power imbalance that exists in any teaching situation and vow that I will not use my position to override the best interests of the student nor to undermine or circumvent his or her freedom of choice.

9.

I am aware that, from time to time, in the normal course of life, sexual attraction can arise between a student and his/her teacher and that this can lead to a wholesome relationship. I understand that any such relationship should take place outside and subsequent to the period in which there was a student/teacher relationship.

10.

I agree that if a teacher decides to use sword teaching to help a student overcome inner obstacles on the path, it will be under the following conditions: that sword teaching only be used for the benefit of the student,
with the student's free prior consent, and that it will never resort to physical harm to the student.

11.

I agree that my conduct can be examined by the Board of Directors of Friends of the Heart and that a student may ask for a review of my conduct at any time.
